The WhatsApp marketing metrics that actually matter
Delivery rate, read rate, reply rate, opt-out rate, and cost per conversation — what good looks like, and which numbers to ignore.

WhatsApp flatters you. Open rates north of 90% look spectacular next to email, and they tempt teams to declare victory on a channel that is quietly burning list quality. Five metrics tell the real story.
Delivery rate should sit above 97%. Anything lower usually means invalid numbers, wrong country codes, or contacts who have blocked you. Clean the list before you blame the platform.
Read rate is high by default, so treat a drop as a warning rather than celebrating the absolute number. A falling read rate on a segment means fatigue.
Reply rate is the metric that predicts revenue. A broadcast that gets 12% of people typing back is worth more than one with a slightly higher read rate and silence. Write for a reply: ask one specific question and make the answer a single word or a button tap.
Opt-out and block rate is your early-warning system. Above roughly 1% per campaign, stop and rethink targeting or frequency before Meta lowers your messaging limit.
Finally, cost per conversation and cost per booked outcome. Meta bills by conversation, so a chatty automation is not automatically expensive if it converts. Track the outcome — call booked, order placed, invoice paid — against conversation cost, and you can defend the channel to anyone holding the budget.
